Department Description

Living Learning Communities is a partnership between the divisions of Academic Affairs and the Student Experience, created in July 2003 to support the growing learning community program at Syracuse University. As such, the office reports through two distinct areas, the Office of the Associate Provost (Academic Affairs) and the Office of Student Living (the Student Experience).

 

The office supports incoming students’ academic and social transition and success at Syracuse University through residential Living Learning Communities. The Living Learning Community Peer Mentor positions are fall-semester only appointments specifically designed to help first year students navigate this transition.

 

The Peer Mentor position will serve nine of our Living Learning Communities (LLCs). We are accepting applications for Peer Mentors for the following LLCs: 

 

  • CIE (Creativity, Innovation, Entrepreneurship) – 1 position available
  • Design – 1 position available
  • Engineering & Computer Science (ECS) – 1 position available
  • Environment & Sustainability – 1 position available
  • Exercise Science – 1 position available
  • Health Studies – 1 position available
  • Honors – 4 positions available
  • International Relations – 1 position available
  • Maxwell – 1 position available
  • Sport Analytics – 1 position available
  • STM (Science, Technology & Math)- 1 position available
  • Whitman – 1 position available

 

Please view the LLC website for specifics about each position. Below is a description of overall peer mentor responsibilities. 

 

Overall Peer Mentor Duties

Academic Resource Education

  • Help students identify personal success goals and strategies.
  • Assist students in navigating institution academic resources such as Orange Success, Degree Works, and Blackboard.
  • Spend a minimum of one hour a week on the LLC floor, checking in with students and offering academic support through regularly scheduled weekly floor hours. Activities and services offered by Peer Mentors during floor hours vary by LLC.

Academic Programming

  • Facilitate the creation of study groups around common courses among LLC students
  • Remain a resource for study groups.
  • Plan and implement three academic workshops during the fall semester: one around utilizing Blackboard & Orange Success, to take place during the first week of the semester; one around academic skills and habits; one about the course registration process.
  • Collaborate with other LLC team members on programs and events as necessary.

Academic Outreach and Support

  • Assist with and attend the LLC orientation event taking place during Syracuse Welcome.
  • Provide necessary referrals to campus academic support services.
  • Support students in managing their academic difficulties.
  • Use and create communication channels specific to LLC to promote academic workshops and academic support.

Training and Other Administrative duties 

  • Adhere to SU and Office of Student Living policies.
  • Participate in peer mentor training asynchronously during the summer months and in August prior to first-year student move in, staff meetings, and supervisor 1on1 meetings.
  • Meet with faculty and staff members that support common classes within the LLC to collaborate on academic support methods.
  • Greet students and parents on the LLC floor as a part of the Fall 2024 move-in during August.
  • Attend LLC team monthly meetings, as your class schedule permits. 
  • Attend the First Week Community Dinner, Fall Bonding and Faculty Meal events that are planned by the LLCRA.
  • Assist with gathering feedback on the peer mentor program from students.

Compensation

Peer Mentors will have an opportunity to earn up to 50 hours at $15.00 hourly rate during the regular academic semester. The maximum compensation for the Fall 2024 semester will not exceed $1,050.00

 

Peer Mentor Qualifications 

  • Be in good academic standing with the university: 3.0 semester GPA and 3.0 cumulative GPA. 
  • Be in good judicial standing with the University.
  • Be able to commit up to 4 hours a week to the PM position. 
  • Be invested in student learning through encouraging academic success, exchanging meaningful dialogue, and supporting personal growth.
  • Demonstrate effective communication skills and enjoy building relationships with students.
  • Display strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Be able to commit to the PM position from August 16 , 2024 - December 13, 2024. 
  • Be able to complete asynchronous training material via Blackboard during July and August 2024.
  • Peer Mentors must be able to arrive to Syracuse on August 16, 2024 to attend in-person training August 17-19. The LLC Office will sponsor students living on campus for early move-in. 
  • Peer Mentors must attend and participate in LLC Orientation during Syracuse Welcome (Date TBD).
  • Candidates who have related majors, taken LLC courses, or lived in an LLC previously will be given priority.

 

Creativity, Innovation and Entrepreneurship (CIE) specific qualifications

Successful completion of EEE 110/PST 110 with a grade of B or higher for CIE candidates.

 

Design specific qualifications

Proficiency with the Adobe Creative Cloud Suite; successful completion of DES 113 with a grade of B or higher; interest in supporting the unique social and academic experience of School of Design students.

 

Engineering & Computer Science (ECS) specific qualifications

Successful completion of CHE 106 and MAT 295 with a grade of B or higher for ECS candidates. 

 

Environment & Sustainability

Successful completion of GEO 103 with a  grade of B or higher.

 

Exercise Science specific qualifications

Successful completion of EXE 195 and BIO 121, BIO 123/124 with a grade of “B” or higher for Health and Exercise Science candidates.

 

Health Studies specific qualifications

Successful completion of BIO 121, BIO 123/124 and CHE 106 with a grade of “B” or higher for Health Studies candidates.

 

Honors specific qualifications

At minimum, second-year student in the Honors program; Previously held an Honors Program Peer Mentor position during the 2023-2024 academic year.

 

International Relations specific qualifications

Successful completion of PSC 124, MAX 132, and ECON 101 with a grade of “B” or higher for International Relations candidates.

 

Maxwell specific qualifications

Enrolled in CCE (Citizenship and Civic Engagement) Major; Junior or Senior class standing with successful completion of MAX 310; successful completion of MAX 123 with a grade of B or higher.

 

STM specific qualifications

Successful completion of CHE 106 and BIO 121 with a grade of “B” or higher for STM candidates. 

 

Whitman

Successful completion of SOM 122 and MAS 261 with a grade of B or higher; Microsoft Excel certification.

 

Adjustments to the position and specific responsibilities may change throughout the 23-24 academic year based on the academic needs of the LLC and instructional methods required by Syracuse University. Any significant changes in responsibilities will be reviewed with the position’s supervisor.
