What I liked

I had the ability to take charge of my own projects and they trusted me to be able to do my work effectively and efficiently without them hovering around to make sure I was on track.

What I wish was different

Advice

Interning at your own university is something that I think most people don't take advantage of enough. You have a ready made network and you get to build on skills you learn in the classroom to give back to your campus community.

Student Researcher

June 2019 • Syracuse, NY

What I liked

I liked being hands on and learning the process behind manufacturing fuel cells rather than simply learning the theory of them. I enjoyed the group of people with which I was doing the research. I appreciated being able to practice presenting on a weekly basis and having 2 bigger presentations.

What I wish was different

I wish I could’ve been more independent but I also did not know enough/have enough experience to be able to do that. I wish I had learned some additional equipment associated with the lab.

Advice

This experience really brings you out of your comfort zone because you are not working with discovered information. The point of research is to try things that have never been done before and analyze the results. I would say not to get discouraged if you feel like you’re lacking experience or knowledge but take that as a challenge to go above and beyond to learn about the concepts and think creatively on how to apply it to your research. You never know what discovery could come from it.

iOS App Developer

May - August 2018 • Syracuse, NY

What I liked

I worked and learned with a team for continued development of an app with server and database integration. I was able to learn while contributing to an useful product. Weekly meetings with supervising professor were helpful and kept goals clear. Fairly relaxed schedule. I arrived on campus ~8AM, at the lab ~10AM, and left ~3-5PM.

What I wish was different

Due to coworkers being students, sometimes it would take a while to receive a clear response. I am personally guilty of this a few times. Communication improved by the end though.

Advice

Be prepared to clearly and frequently communicate on blocking conditions.

Inventor

May - June 2019 • New York City, NY

What I liked

- Independent work - Hands-on experience - Team bonding activities - Challenged creativity & time-management skills

What I wish was different

- Less dependency on supervisor and TA's - Barely any networking opportunities with guest judges - Lack of diversity amongst judges (mainly the final judging) - Provide tutorials for using programs such as SolidWorks, Arduino, etc. - Create a steady pace for the program; it was very rushed towards the end

Advice

Try to brainstorm multiple ideas for inventions/innovations before the program begins. Also, it is definitely helpful to familiarize yourself with applications such as SolidWorks, Arduino, and even Adobe photoshop-- all of it helps! P.S. The money you're given does take into account transportation (for Summer 2019's budget at least). Since the program was held in NYC, I had commute via train, paying roughly $5.50 every day for the duration of the program.
